about the artist

Sonja Thomsen works with elements such as water and oil to consider natural phenomena. Convergence at the surface, of element, light and wind uses the flatness of the photograph to highlight the subtlety of perception. The work points to the mystical as well as alluding to the political. Thomsen’s work is experiential, having much to do with the presence of the photographic object. The photographs and their installation are evocative rather than descriptive.

Sonja Thomsen is a photographer based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She received an MFA in photography from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2004 and a BA from Kenyon College in 2000. Thomsen is currently a part time faculty member at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. Thomsen's photographs have been featured in group exhibitions throughout the United States. Her photographs are in the permanent collection of the Milwaukee Art Museum. Thomsen was a participating artist in Review Santa Fe 2006. She was the recipient of the Greater Milwaukee Mary L. Nohl Suitcase Export Fund in 2006 to participate in exhibition juried by Paul Kopeikin at the Photographic Center Northwest, Seattle WA. Thomsen has recently shown in the 2007 Wisconsin Triennial at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, Madison WI and the 2007 Silverstein Photography Annual, Silverstein Photography, New York NY. Thomsen’s work has been reviewed in Chicago’s New City Art, Milwaukee’s Shepherd Express and Journal Sentinel, as well as The NewYorker’s “Goings on about town”. Sonja Thomsen was awarded a 2008 artist residency at The Hermitage Artist Retreat in Englewood, FL. Anthony Bannon, director of the George Eastman House, nominated her for this honor.
